Atlanta-Based Renovation and Custom Home Construction Company Attended Annual National Association of Home Builders Event in Las Vegas in January 2013

What can only be described as the Oscars and Fashion Week of the Residential Construction Industry rolled into one, the International Builders’ Show is THE place for builders, renovators, designers, sales/marketing professionals, suppliers and manufacturers to see and be seen. Hosted by the National Association of Home Builders each year at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, the International Builders’ Show is comprised of three days jam-packed with education sessions, special events and exhibit halls filled with displays from every facet of the industry.  Needless to say, Atlanta-based custom home builder and renovator, Highlight Homes was very excited to be there!

Not only did we have an opportunity to attend enlightening education sessions and sit in on interesting industry segment forums, we also got a front row seat for the latest trends and up-and-coming manufacturers that might help shape the future of the home building/renovating industry. And the future is BRIGHT! This was the best attended show in the last five years. Optimism abounded throughout the exhibition halls. Based on our own observations, it’s clear that builder confidence is on the rise, which directly affects the health of the nation’s housing market. While our feet were tired from three days of walking mile-after-mile of exhibition halls and our brains were on overload from all of the stimulation we received, now that we’ve had a few weeks to digest all of the information – we are filled with inspiration and can’t wait to bring some of that excitement to Highlight Homes’ renovation projects over the coming months.

Just as Highlight Homes looks outside of our own brains for inspiration from time-to-time, we always recommend the same to our clients.  While our design/build team will bring our own set of enthusiasm, ideas and expertise to every project we undertake, that first spark of inspiration comes from the client themselves. That is often the reason they’ve called us – to take their vision and make it a reality. We’ve found that the best way to communicate that vision to us is through a “Dream Book.” Begin combing through home décor and design magazines, catalogues and websites – clip or print the pages that inspire you the most and compile them into your book. Feel free to draw pictures and take photos to add to the book, as well. Even though we can’t all be in attendance at the International Builders’ Show, inspiration can come from just about anywhere!

Renovations for Retiring Baby Boomers on the Rise

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 40.3 million Americans turned 65 or older in the United States in 2010. That’s nearly 13% of the entire nation’s population. In addition, that number was up 5.3 million from just 10 years earlier, which was up 3.8 million from 10 years before that. It’s clear that America’s Baby Boomer generation – born between 1946 and 1964 – is either at or nearing retirement age and looking forward to their golden years. Pantone Color Report Spring 2013: Pantone LLC, an X-Rite company and the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries recently released its fashion color report for Spring 2013. With gorgeous garden-themed hues like Tender Shoots green (PANTONE 14-0446), African Violet purple (PANTONE 16-3520) and Poppy Red (PANTONE 17-1664), it’s evident that color will be in bloom in both fashion and décor over the coming months.

House Beautiful: House Beautiful Magazine writer Mimi Read showcases some exciting, up-and-coming developments in the realm of interior design for her article “10 Home Decorating Trends That Will be Hot in 2013.” We won’t spoil the surprise, but we think she’s right on target with regard to homey kitchens and sophisticated man caves (eh-hem, Highlight Homes can help you incorporate both into your own home!)

We are curious about the release of their new tintable chalkboard paint (Product # 308), which is “a latex topcoat that turns virtually any interior surface into a chalkboard. Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association’s Green Building Council – For the past year, our fearless leader – Tony Pourhassan – has been proud to serve alongside other builders and renovators who are dedicated to promoting and implementing Green Building practices in the state of Georgia. As both a developer and builder, Tony has long been a proponent of green building and it shows with his involvement in the Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design for Homes (LEED-H) Program, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Green Building Program, the Energy Star Program, and the Earth Craft House Program. He was most honored to take part in the White House Energy, Environment and Conservation Roundtable in January 2012.

Trends can be very exciting!  Sometimes they virtually reinvent the way we view a home renovation – for example, the incorporation of earth-friendly elements and products in recent years, and sometimes they are merely a flash-n-the-pan fad – as seen in the 1970’s with shag carpeting and avocado green appliances.  Highlight Homes was thrilled to embrace many of the design trends of 2012 by incorporating them into the homes of our clients. While we look ahead to more exciting changes for 2013 in the design and renovation universe, we also pay homage to the trends of the past year – all of which we believe are here to stay.

White Kitchens

According to the color experts at Pantone, white exudes an impression of “clean and pure” – both great elements for any kitchen. White also adds a light and airy feel to the heart of the home. It takes on the role of a splendid neutral that works well with a rainbow of colors. Black and white together often exude a sense of luxury, shades of neutral and white can have a calming effect, and brights with white can add an air of playfulness to any room. Whites can come in a number of hues – from the striking snow and white whites to a richer ivory or eggshell white. When dealing with confined areas, white can help make a small space look larger. It can add a chic vibe to a contemporary kitchen or a romantic feel to a more traditional room. Highlight Homes witnessed a major uptick in the requests for white and ivory cabinetry over the classic cherry and oak in 2012. One of our favorite renovations of the year was a striking white kitchen remodel in Newnan.

Spa-Inspired Bathrooms

While this one is not a new trend for 2012, it is one we saw virtually explode over the past 12 months. No matter what you call it – lavatory, washroom, powder room, toilet, little girl’s/boy’s room, outhouse, potty, privy or the john – the number one trend that continuing to sweep the nation in bathroom remodeling is the transformation from a “necessary” room into a luxury retreat, something more worthy of the title “REST”room.
